Hunting for the "Heart of the Mountain" at Pitugro Waterfall, Umphang

When speaking of Umphang District, Tak Province, many might first think of the grandeur of Thi Lo Su Waterfall. However, deep within the eastern Thung Yai Naresuan Forest, a beautiful secret remains hidden amidst the mountains and mist: "Pitugro Waterfall" or "Pre-Toe-Lo-Su Waterfall", famously known as the "Heart-shaped Waterfall", a place trekkers and adventure lovers dream of experiencing firsthand at least once in their lives.
💚 The Grandeur of a Heart Deep in the Forest
The reason this waterfall is named the "Heart-shaped Waterfall" is because two streams of water cascade down from a steep cliff over 500 meters high (making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Thailand) and converge at the bottom. When viewed from a distant viewpoint, the white streams contrast with the lush greenery of the forest, forming a magnificent heart shape miraculously created by nature.
Especially during the rainy season when water volume is high, the streams swell and fully cover the cliff, making this heart shape appear full, vibrant, and so beautiful that one forgets the fatigue of the journey.
🥾 A Trail to Test Your Spirit, Towards the Heart of the Forest
Reaching the beauty of the heart-shaped waterfall is no easy feat and requires sweat and effort. The journey typically takes about 3 days and 2 nights, or 2 days and 1 night (for those who are very fit), starting from Kui Ler To village in Umphang District.
Trekking Route: You will have to trek through mud, cross streams, climb steep hills, and brave leech-infested areas, especially on the ascent to "Doi Mamuang Sam Muen Peak", which offers the most beautiful high-angle view of the waterfall and a stunning sea of mist. The trail is steep and requires high caution.
Camping: There are no facilities whatsoever. You will have to sleep in tents, eat meals in the forest, and use water from streams for personal hygiene. It's a true return to nature.

Essential Gear:
Hiking boots with deep treads and good slip resistance (many people prefer 'stud doi' mountain cleats).
Leech socks and insect repellent spray.
Raincoat, waterproof bags for electronic devices.
Personal medication and basic first-aid kit.
Trekking pole (helps greatly reduce knee strain).
